Bellew confirms fight is off for good if Haye gets injured again

‘The Bomber’ has been forced to wait six months for his rematch as Haye recovers from bicep surgery, delaying the fight from a date originally set for December until May 5th.

Haye is known to be prone to things going wrong in the gym, although Bellew won’t consider another date should the veteran be forced to call off the fight again.

“I will have not thrown a punch in a ring with 10oz gloves on for the best part of 18 (14) months and, I’ll be honest, that is a bit of a worry,” Bellew told a BBC Sport podcast

“That will benefit David Haye more than it will me as he’s used to having lay-offs.

“He’s the guy with the injuries that need to heal. I will say this, if it happens again and has to be rearranged, I will not entertain it. I have always wanted the fight but it was very hard to schedule this again.”

Bellew says the extra time has been used wisely on his part – if only to give the Liverpool man time grieve for the loss of a family member.

“The only saving grace was that mentally I was not in a good place for December. I’d lost my brother-in-law and it’s been a hard time, a devastating time for me and my family.”

An expected crowd of 20,000 will once again pack out The O2 Arena for the anticipated return, with Bellew a slight underdog despite claiming a first bout stoppage in March of last year.
