Mayweather refuses to rush Davis into Lomachenko clash despite ex-champ ‘wanting fight’

The pair of rivals have been vocal in their desire to share a ring, prior to and after Lomachenko defeated Guillermo Rigondeaux in fine style on December 9.

With Lomachenko world-renowned due to his exploits at the top level over the last two years, Mayweather is not going to surge ‘Tank’ into a meeting that could ultimately break the undefeated Baltimore man into the pound for pound ratings.

“At the end of the day, I’m going to say, ‘Tank, there’s no rush. You’re still young. If you want to fight, there’s plenty of fights. You got a lot of fights left in you. You’re only 22, just turning 23 years old,’ ” Mayweather told FightHype.com.

“If he wants to fight till he’s 36, 37, he’s still got 15 years left. He’s OK. But if you rush and fight all the hard fights right now, you ain’t going to be able to make it to 38 or 39 in the boxing business.”

Mayweather also stated that he wanted ‘nothing but the best’ for Lomachenko but warned the current P4P #2 not to, “ever let nobody put no battery in your back to pump you up to talk disrespectfully about no fighter that’s with me,” in reference to a direct tweet aimed at Mayweather after ‘Hi-Tech’ initially stated he’d loved to have fought the man himself.

“Because I’m not hiding nobody. Tank wants to fight you. Tank ain’t hiding from you. Tank wants to fight you,” added the 40 year-old boxing legend.

Davis, 23, last fought when defeating Francisco Fonseca in August after dropping his IBF belt due to a weight issue and has since been linked to a move up to lightweight.

Mayweather has insisted Davis can still make the super-featherweight limit, although the general consensus is both Davis and Lomachenko are contemplating moves north of 130 in 2018.
