‘No-one thought we’d make GGG v Canelo in 2017!’ – Oscar De La Hoya promises big 2018

Golovkin and Canelo, the two best middleweights around, traded blows back in September – fighting out a controversial draw which fans hope breeds a return offering.

As both sides push to make it happen on May 5th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, De La Hoya revealed his aspirations for the coming twelve months with Golden Boy Promotions.

“I think 2017 was a nice lead-in to what 2018 has in store for us. 2017 was great. We were able to make Canelo vs. Golovkin, which, I mean, no one in their right mind ever thought we could make that fight happen,” De La Hoya told Peter Kahn in an interview with Forbes.

“The beautiful thing about that fight was that I was telling everybody all along, 2017 is the year that Canelo and Golovkin are going to fight and it happened.”

He continued by aiming for more of the same in the New Year: “We had a great run with ESPN, we have a long-term contract with them, I’m excited for all our top prospects that we’re promoting.

“2018 is going to be a big year for us once again. Golden Boy Promotions is in this for the long-haul, we’re doing what we do best, and that is building fighters, get them to that championship level and hopefully we’ll find a few pay-per-view stars here and there.”

Mexico City and Texas have also been mentioned for GGG v Canelo 2, although it’s understood that Nevada is the frontrunner and will host the rematch should negotiations be concluded in early January.
