Boxing braces as two big fight announcements near for 2018

Encounters which have huge repercussions for the middleweight and heavyweight divisions are currently at an advanced stage.

At 160, Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez are closing in on a rematch for May 5th in Las Vegas, whilst Anthony Joshua and Joseph Parker seem ready to sign on the dotted line for a spring unification in the top division.

The latter is expected to take place first with dates at the end of March or throughout April in play as both sides approach a compromise on previous disagreements over the purse split.

Joshua wants a considerable slice of the pie due to his earning ability and pull from the United Kingdom audience, whilst Parker believes his status as a fellow title holder gives him more clout in negotiations.

Whatever the case, promoter Eddie Hearn is confident a deal can be done, whilst Parker’s handler David Higgins is no longer pushing his case meaning talks are going well.

As fans prepare to see the heavyweight category push further in the direction of one man again, the middleweight division is already there as Golovkin currently holds four of the five belts on offer which will soon be the case once the dust settles on Joshua v Parker.

Golovkin has to do it all over again after seemingly doing more than enough to win the first fight with Canelo but will have the cushion of consolation that comes with another massive payday on Pay-Per-View.

The two are on the verge of heading back to the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas to headline boxing’s capital, eight months on from their original clash at the same venue in September of this year.

A hotly debated draw scored by Don Trella and a shocking 118-110 Adalaide Byrd scorecard to the challenger saw ‘GGG’ robbed of his greatest night, and with Canelo having more time to acclimatize to 160 with the added bonus of knowing what to expect, many see the chances of Golovkin doing a similar job as slim.

Official announcements on both contests could be made by the end of 2017 as boxing braces for another mouth-watering twelve months for all to enjoy.
