Roman Gonzalez has been positioned as the number one contender to Kal Yafai's super-flyweight title in the latest WBA rankings released early in December.
The former WBC champion, who was rated as the pound for pound best until losing his title to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai and then being defeated again in a rematch, is close to landing a mandatory shot at the British fighter's belt.
Reports have surfaced the encounter could happen on the recently announced 'Superfly 2' card headlined by Rungvisai's bout with Juan Estrada, although nothing is yet set in stone.
WBA President Gilberto Mendoza hasn't made a formal ruling on the matter as things stand and could yet pitch Gonzalez against number two ranked Norberto Jimenez in a final eliminator for Yafai.
Meanwhile, the last month of the year will feature two World Boxing Association (WBA) championship fights. Two male bouts and one female bout will be on the international schedules for the end of 2017.
The first fight will be the defense of the Irish Katie Taylor (7-0, 4KO), who will step in the ring on December 13 in London to expose her Lightweight crown against American Jessica McCaskill (5-1, 3KO). For Taylor, it will be the first defense of her title, which she won last October against Anahí Esther Sánchez.
Finally, on New Year’s Eve, the Light Flyweight Champion, Ryoichi Taguchi (26-2-2, 12KO), will try to close the year in a good way on December 31 against Filipino Milan Melindo (37-2, 13KO) in a very interesting fight that will take place in Tokyo, the birthplace of the champion.
The fights will be a pretty successful year-end for the WBA, which has had a calendar full of good battles and lots of action around the world.
