‘Joshua would be begging!’ – De La Hoya clearly not happy with career progress of ex-GBP star Wilder

Following a sickening knockout win over Bermane Stiverne last week, Wilder has been calling on Joshua to agree a super-fight, although so far it’s the Briton and promoter Eddie Hearn who are calling the shots.

Wilder, who is guided by Lou DiBella, Shelly Finkel and Al Haymon since leaving Golden Boy in 2015, is currently 39-0 with 38 knockouts but has struggled to land the bigger names in the division through no fault of his own.

Rather than blaming the failed drugs tests by Alexander Povetkin and Luis Ortiz, De La Hoya is placing some blame on the trio behind Wilder’s career and says things would have been a lot different if ‘The Bronze Bomber’ had stayed in the same stable as Canelo Alvarez.

“I promoted Deontay Wilder’s first 33 fights and made him a champion,” pointed out De La Hoya.

“If I was his promoter he would be a star and Anthony Joshua would be begging for the fight and not the other way around,” he added.

Hearn met with Wilder’s team this week to discuss the fight happening in 2018 as the boxing world holds it’s breath for what would be one on the biggest transatlantic battles since Mike Tyson v Lennox Lewis in 2002.

Both sides are on board with the contest going ahead in the next twelve months and it just seems to be a case of whether Joshua will take on Joseph Parker first in order to put all the belts in one basket for Wilder.
