Golovkin v Canelo II – May 5, 2018: THE ONLY fight to make, THE FIGHT everybody wants

Golovkin was seemingly the aggessor and boss of an entertaining contest against the Mexican superstar, but ended up on the sorry side of a highly-debated draw.

Canelo was gifted the result and spared a second reverse on his record as the two-weight world title holder struggled to deal with the relentless pressure of the Kazakh.

Visibly tiring after six rounds, Canelo was beaten by the better man on the night, something which has since been recognized by the majority of fans and media alike.

So what next?

Golovkin wants an interim fight before any rematch, whilst Canelo’s date of Cinco de Mayo is already signed a sealed and just depends on an opponent being confirmed.

That foe has to be ‘GGG’ and hopefully Golden Boy and Oscar De La Hoya are on the same page as the rest of us and don’t decide to hesitate.

Trainer Abel Sanchez, who seemingly masterminded Golovkin’s greatest victory, has already informed WBN he’s pulling for the fight to happen in the spring of next year, presumably at the same venue.

“Tom Loeffler is communication with Golden Boy and will know soon,” Sanchez exclusively told World Boxing News.

“I don’t know what the terms or concessions we and Golden Boy will have to do for fight to happen in May 2018,” he added cautiously.

Should Canelo decide to challenge Billy Joe Saunders for the only strap not in Golovkin’s possession, the only other conceivable option, it would be massive disappointment and mean the latter would be pushing 37 before he got the chance to reinforce his previous performance.

As Golovkin is now the top boxer on the planet due to Andre Ward’s retirement, his pulling power is stronger than ever, something that could irk Canelo – who is known to be a stickler for keeping himself as the A-side.

This may well make the bout tougher to make on the back of plenty of squables before the original September meeting, and for my money could see Golden Boy opt to avoid a second helping for the time being.

Let’s hope not.
