Byrd scored the breathtaking encounter 118-110 to Canelo Alvarez despite the Mexican seemingly being out-fought and out-worked for the majority of the bout.
Fans around the world gasped as the scores were read out, which robbed Golovkin of what should have been a career-defining victory in Las Vegas.
Even the 115-113 handed in by Dave Moretti – and in favour of Golovkin, could have been slightly questioned, whilst Don Trella seemingly got away with giving Canelo an undeserved draw.
Some of the rounds were closer than others, around four at a push, two of which (the second and sixth) WBN carded for Canelo. The Mexican had claims to the third session and the final one, but overall was largely out-punched and worn down by Golovkin, whose career has been held back by the incompetance of Byrd and Trella.
Bennett has now moved to confirm Byrd will be shelved for the time being.
“I’m not going to put her right back in,” Bennett told the Los Angeles Times.
“She’ll still be in the business … but she needs to catch her breath. Like in any profession, you have a bad night.
“Unfortunately, she didn’t do well. I can tell you she conducts training for us, takes judges under her wing… but her score was too wide.”
Talk of a rematch in May 2018 is already dominating the headlines, although Golovkin could turn his attention to a unification with Billy Joe Saunders in December to avoid a nine-month spell out of the ring.
