Canelo faces Golovkin for all the middleweight marbles in just over a week, fresh from a trio of victories over Khan himself in May 2016, Liam Smith three months later and Julio Cesar Chavez on Cinco de Mayo of this year.
Giving his valued opinion of the contest, Khan sees Canelo having the superior firepower and skills to grab Golovkin’s clutch of belts and overtake Andre Ward at the top of the pound for pound rankings.
“I’ve got Canelo winning this fight because he’s got a lot more movement. I mean, GGG is a great fighter – don’t’ get me wrong, he’s unbeaten but I think he’s very static,” Khan exclusively told World Boxing News.
“Golovkin hasn’t really shown that he’s been at his best in his last few performances and he had a very tough fight against Daniel Jacobs. A lot of people thought he lost the Jacobs fight and I was one of them.
“With Canelo, I’ve obviously fought the guy and been in the ring with him. He’s a class act, a good boxer and he moves well.
“Canelo also hits very hard, and when people say GGG is the power puncher in this fight I think they might be wrong. Canelo is one of the biggest punchers in that division, and in my opinion, he wins this fight on points as he can box as well as punch.”
Khan went on: “Sometimes the way Canelo boxes, he hits and moves, plus he’s half decent for work rate as well. His upper body movement is good which GGG doesn’t have so that’s why I’m favouring more towards Canelo.
“In a way, it’s a 50-50 fight and it may be that a lot of people will be thinking Golovkin is winning and a lot of people thinking Canelo is winning, but I just think it’s going to be Canelo.
“He’s got quick hands, he punches hard and has good movement. Plus, I believe he has a lot more experience in bigger, tougher fights and being under pressure.
“Canelo has shown a lot of skills in his recent fights and I think he will do it,” he predicted.
As Khan continues preparations for an imminent return to the ring in the coming months, the former super-lightweight king outlined the progress of taking his Super Fight League series, originating on Indian soil, further across Asia and eventually around the globe.
“We are in the process of taking our Super Boxing League, the team format of competition, from India to Pakistan. We did a soft launch today and I’m looking forward to it and one day bringing it to England and maybe America.
“It’s a professional league and it gives young fighters a chance. We also have the WBC on board. They are part of it and have been really good affiliating with us,” revealed Khan.
The Canelo reverse remains the last time Khan graced the ring fifteen months ago as the Bolton man trains in America for a 2018 assault on the world welterweight crown.
