Les Byfield to fight Andy Harris on Aug 5

Byfield has been paired with the 34-year-old veteran for fight night at the high street establishment on Saturday August 5, writes Craig Birch.

‘The Minefield,’ from Netherton, steps up from four-rounders for the first time against Harris, who will be competing in his 54th pro contest.

The show has been titled ‘Knocked for Six,’ as Byfield and Rowley Regis’ Tyler Denny are both featuring over six.

Super feather Byfield and middleweight Denny keep up their record on appearing on every pro card together going into their ninth outing, four of those coming under the Venue lights.

Brummies Kane Baker and Daryl Pearce, from Bartley Green and Rednal respectively, also occupy the home corner in the welterweight division, as does Nottingham’s Ekow Essuman.

Gloucester’s Harris completed the distance of six in just his second pro bout and has done the same on several occasions since.

He’s gone further than that, too, with his most famous paid win an eight-round points victory over Robbie Barratt, who is now the British lightweight champion.

Byfield will enter the battle full of confidence, after scoring his first TKO on the previous bill at the Venue last month.

He removed Russell Midgley in the third, with a relentless barrage of punches in the ropes, to secure an early finish.

The former unlicensed campaigner has rebuilt well after losing his paid debut on points and hasn’t dropped a round in seven straight wins since.

He feels the benefits of training with Jason Astley, a security officer for Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren, with Astley working towards becoming a qualified pro coach.

Byfield said: “After seven months off (before Midgley), it was good to get back in there. People told me it’s the best I’ve ever boxed and it must have been to get the TKO.

“Jason knows how to push me and bring the best out of me, so it was a happy camp and I didn’t feel like I was under pressure.

“Maybe a break served me well, I wasn’t carrying any injuries and I felt like I had a bit of hunger, I wanted to put on a good show for the fans.

“I remember thinking in there ‘I’m going to punch until the bell goes or he does.’ There was one minute and 40 seconds left of the round.

“I did that in the third, but there’s enough two rounds to get through this time. If another stoppage comes, then great but I’m training for a longer distance.

“I think the calibre of opponent will be a little bit better in a six-round fight. I’ll always be learning and I just need to keep on doing the business.”
