Lee Selby retains IBF title, Martin Ward edges Anthony Cacace war

The Welshman floored the Argentine in the twelfth round and looked set to end it in style before the bell came to the 33-year-old’s rescue.

The ‘Welsh Mayweather’ secured victory with the judges scoring it 119-108, and two totals of 117-110.

Despite a cut to the top of his left eye in round five, it was a comfortable night for the slick featherweight.

Carl Frampton was in the crowd watching and Selby will be hoping to secure a mouth-watering ‘Battle of Britain’ clash with the Belfast man if victorious over Andres Gutierrez on July 29.

Also on the bill, someone’s ‘0’ had to go and it was Anthony Cacace who tasted defeat as the judges scored the fight 115-114, 116-114 and 116-113, all in favour to Martin J Ward.

The opening rounds cost the Northern Irishmen the fight as Ward came out of the blockers much quicker, landing the cleaner shots.

During the middle rounds, Cacace finally proved Carl Frampton’s statement on the power he possesses as he rocked Ward several multiple times with his ferocious left hook.

The last few rounds were a close affair with both going for it, but it was Ward who emerged victorious.

The 26-year-old retained the British super-featherweight title as well as adding the Commonwealth title to his mantel piece. He extends his undefeated record to 18-0-2.
