Despite earning over $300m from his fight with Manny Pacquiao in 2015 and opening his own gentleman’s club recently, rumours Mayweather needed to fight Conor McGregor in order to pay backtaxes hit the headlines on Monday.
The news prompted a response from Mayweather, who says he paid a ten-figure sum to the IRS two years ago and claimed whispers of financial troubles were wide of the mark.
“Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear, especially when it comes to media in this country,” said Mayweather defiantly.
“While everyone is counting my money and assuming the worst, these are the facts… Uncle Sam, received $26,000,000.00 from me in 2015! What else could they possibly want?
“I’m sure I would have been notified much sooner if there were any real discrepancies right?
“Bottom line, everybody just wants to be a part of the “Money May” show, including the IRS!
“That’s fine, you can crunch numbers all day but in the end, my empire is rock solid and intact. Now Calculate That!”
Mayweather embarks on a press tour with McGregor this week in a bid to drum up support for his cross-codes clash with the two-weight UFC champion.
Confirmation the Pay-Per-View is to cost $99.95 on August 26 means Mayweather and McGregor will be pushing hard to justify fans forking out their hard earned cash to witness the Las Vegas battle.
