Jaw-breaker: George Groves heads for surgery after world title win

The Londoner fended off a marauding Fedor Chudinov to halt the Russian dangerman in six rounds at Brammall Lane in Sheffield and now has his eyes on a unification clash.

In taking some punishment dished out by Chudinov, Groves has since revealed the injury happened in the third round as things looked rather hairy for the eventual victor.

“It turns out I only went and broke my jaw in the third round on Saturday. (Either) that or broke it from over-smiling since,” said Groves in a pre-operation post.

A second fight with James DeGale is set to happen in the next eighteen months, according to Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn, who works closely with Groves’ handlers Sauerland.

The pair first fought in 2011 with Groves scoring a majority decision win, which has since led to constant speculation the pair would rumble again once both held a world title – as they do now.
