Tony Luis notches 23rd career win at Cornwall Civic Complex

In an evening dominated by Liveco boxers, Luis and Akwesasne’s Ronnie “Rocket” Robidoux (3-0 2KOs) packed the house with raucous fans and didn’t disappoint them.

In the main event, Luis hounded an increasingly frustrated Noe Nuñez (17-5-1 13KOs) with withering body punches in Luis’ first pro fight on home soil. The Cornwall native hit his stride in the third round, pushing the taller Nuñez around with left hooks and landing shots up high. The left hooks started savaging the Mexican, known as “El Dengue,” in the fourth. Luis scored a TKO when Nuñez could not answer the bell in the seventh round after hitting the canvas, requiring a three-minute recovery.

Akwesasne’s Robidoux fed the local fans their first taste of home cooking earlier in the evening with a commanding performance over Jesus Ortega (2-4-1). Robidoux took the fight to Ortega early and never backed down. Ortega resorted to tying up and playing defense through the four-rounder suffering a unanimous decision loss to the undefeated, hard-hitting Robidoux.

Liveco founder and CEO Ron Sanderson said they could not have scripted the night any better. “We are so proud of our fighters and so pleased with the turnout in Cornwall. The fans gave all of the fighters tremendous backing and really brought the house down for Tony and Ronnie.”

Liveco’s other two boxers on the undercard, Daniel “El Pantera” Andujo and “ILL” Will Madera, notched wins in their Cornwall debuts as well. Southern California’s Andujo (4-1 1KO) opened the evening in a frenzied bout against Toronto’s P.G. Tondo. The boxers traded punches from the first bell, landing 50 percent of their power shots in a crowd-pleasing, four-rounder with Andujo earning a majority decision.

Albany’s Madera (9-0 4KOs) stopped a tough Omar Valenzuela (9-6-2 4KOs) in the middle of the fifth round. According to Liveco’s exclusive matchmaker, Zac Pomilio, Madera put on a clinic with a “total dismantling of Valenzuela using beautiful defense and a complete all-around demonstration of boxing skill.”

In the evening’s other bouts, six-time Canadian champion Custio Clayton (11-0 9KOs) started strong and finished fast against Alfredo Chavez (12-9 10KOs). Three minutes into the first round, Clayton earned his ninth knockout when he launched a devastating left hook that ended Chavez’ evening. In the night’s second fight, Mississauga’s Michael Brandon (4-0 2KO) dismissed Michell Polina (1-3-1 1KO) with a unanimous decision after four rounds.

“The hometown fans were really into it the whole evening,” Pomilio said. “It was a good crowd. They got to see Tony fight in-person for the first time. They got to see a talented, humble fighter but also a classy professional who deserves a shot at the title.”
