Indongo shines to dethrone Burns, Barrett shocks lacklustre Cardle

The 34 year-old, who had previously upset Eduard Troyanovsky in Russia to claim the IBF and IBO super-lightweight titles, added Burns’ WBA version with a comprehensive performance.

Burns just couldn’t nullify Indongo’s work and struggled to get into the fight, in which a case could be made for the Scotsman to hardly win a round.

Despite being the pre-fight favourite and having the crowd on his side, Burns failed to ignite and dropped his belt to the far superior fighter.

In the end, the scorecards read 120-108, 118-110 and 116-112 to Indongo, who is now a major player in the division and has put himself in line for a lucrative unification with Terence Crawford.

Once the dust settled, Burns vowed to return from a sixth career loss, although the Coatbridge man may consider retirement following a hard career consisting of world titles in three different weight classes.

The SSE Hydro co-feature involved Scotty Cardle’s attempt to win the Lonsdale belt at 135 pounds outright against Robbie Barrett.

Similar to Burns, Cardle found it difficult to find his rhythm as Barrett frustrated the champion for the duration.

Despite being given counts in the second and fifth, Barrett was able to emerge victorious (115-113, 114-112, 114-114) to take the British belt back to Yorkshire.

Promoter Eddie Hearn may lobby for a rematch between the pair, which Cardle would have to considerably raise his game for if given a second chance to own the coveted UK crown.

Also on the bill, Charlie Edwards put his world title reverse to John Riel Casimero firmly behind him when out-pointing Iain Butcher convincingly over the championship distance.

Edwards won 120-108 (twice) and 120-109 with the judges in a contest Butcher was unable to win the belt due to coming in heavy on the scales the previous day.
