Danny Garcia rated #1 by the WBC following Keith Thurman clash

Garcia lost his belt to Thurman in a massive unification in New York last month, but due to his past excellence as a World Boxing Council champion, the 29 year-old occupies the number one spot in the new WBC Ratings for April.

The decision would certainly be attributed to how closely matched Garcia and Thurman were in terms and guile and skill, potentially leading to early speculation the WBC would be willing to sanction a return.

Number three-rated Andre Berto and Shawn Porter are set to battle it out for the mandatory position on April 22, giving Garcia a couple more weeks to state his case to WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman for a second chance.

Once the dust settles on the Berto v Porto bout, Garcia faces been pushed back to the number two, which in turn would see current second placed Amir Khan drop down the pecking order even further.

Khan announced his decision not to seek out another fight until the completion of the Ramadan festival during May and June, meaning the Briton looks likely to be out until at least October.

There had been some talk of a possible Khan v Garcia rematch until the Bolton man made his plans clear on Monday, leaving ‘Swift’ with few options for any comeback fight in the summer.

Garcia may go after Lamont Peterson in his bid to win another version of the 147 strap, although Thurman himself has also been linked to facing ‘King Pete’ who represents his own mandatory with the WBA.
