Shocker: Kessler returns as Froch says he’d consider trilogy at 175

The Dane vowed to stay away for good back in 2013 but has been enticed by promoters Sauerland’s involvement in the World Boxing Super Series for the Muhammad Ali Trophy.

This latest revelation has made Froch stand up and take notice, whilst ‘The Cobra’ has been videoed in top shape in the gym this week getting put through his paces by coach Rob McCracken.

“I’ve always said fighters should stay retired but I’ve got to be honest, this has really got me thinking! It is 1-1 of course and if anything is going to get me going again – it is a decider with Mikkel Kessler,” Froch told Sky Sports.

“He said he’d have it on an island, but of course I am retired… for now.

“There were a few things flying around Twitter after people saw me sparring up in Sheffield yesterday, so it was not a huge surprise when this came out.

“And as I’ve always said and will say again, I would rather see fighters keep away – especially after almost four years away – but looking at it, Kessler might be the best super-middleweight to do it.

“We don’t know what his motivation is – and I am sure you all have your own opinion on that – but this has really got me thinking.

“Does he have a chance of making a dent in the current division? Well, maybe. If he was at his peak of course, definitely, but because he loves nothing but a fight, he could cause a stir.

“Not wanting to disrespect the current super-middleweight division, he would make things extremely difficult for any of them, James DeGale, Callum Smith and George Groves included.

“I am like any other retired fighter, I think the current division is not as good as it was when me and Kessler were in our prime.

“Of course, we need to see what shape Kessler is in. We don’t know what his motivation is – and I am sure you all have your own opinion on that – but this has really got me thinking.

“Kessler’s coming back at 168lbs though. Now if he were to do it at light-heavyweight, maybe I would accommodate him. Who knows? Even I don’t know at the moment,” he added.

The super-middleweight division is currently seen as one of the weakest divisions, but at 38 years of age, Kessler would be up against it if facing the likes of DeGale or the fresher Smith and Gilberto Ramirez.

A clash with Froch would still have big appeal though as Kessler won the first meeting on home soil in 2010 before the Nottingham man returned the favor three years later.

Any trilogy bout could take place at a neutral venue, potentially in the United States, although Kessler could now be tied up in the upcoming tournament that as of yet, Froch isn’t a part of.
