Derry Mathews bows out with pride following entertaining career

The 33 year-old, nicknamed ‘The Golden Boy’ and ‘Dirty’ Derry through his 52-fight career, bows out a former two-weight English and ex-British, Commonwealth and interim WBA lightweight champion with his head firmly held high.

Ohara Davies will go down as the final opponent of Mathews’ illustrious time in the sport, having proved too strong in a three-round onslaught at the O2 Arena on the David Haye v Tony Bellew undercard.

Mathews is one of the most likeable fighters to grace the British boxing roster over fourteen years and his work with the under privileged outside of the ring will continue as the ‘Solly’ stalwart takes a deserved rest from engaging in wars for the fans’ pleasure.

There were many epic matches for Mathews throughout his stint, possibly too many single out, but those involving Anthony Crolla, John Simpson, Matthew Marsh, Tommy Coyle, Tony Luis and Terry Flanagan are just some of the battle scars.

Also on the London undercard, Katie Taylor made it three wins on the spin as a pro, whilst Lee Selby, Ted Cheeseman, Jake Bonallie and David Allen all enjoyed victories.

The night could have also seen a final fight for the UK faithful to witness two-weight world title holder Paulie Malignaggi in action following a brutal loss to Sam Eggington. A sickening body shot in the eighth round saw ‘The Magic Man’ lose for the eighth time in his career.
