Exclusive: Yvan Mendy manager Mehdi Lafifi wants to wait for Luke Campbell rematch

Campbell overcame Jairo Lopez at the Ice Arena in Hull to successfully defend the WBC Silver lightweight title in his home city.

‘Le Lion’ defeated Campbell in December 2015, a loss that remains the only blemish on the Olympic gold medallist’s record, although Mendy’s manager Mehdi Lafifi intends to hold off on negotiations until one of the contenders holds a world title belt.

“Yvan has a program set for the next six months. Especially since we signed with Brahim Asloum Promotions (Former Olympic champion and WBA world champion). He also signed a network contract with SFR SPORTS, a new major TV company that recently claimed the rights to show Klitschko vs Joshua (in France),” Lafifi exclusively told World Boxing News.

“I was in touch with Eddie Hearn’s staff at Matchroom, but we didn’t hear any news from them when we asked about the opportunity to do it.

“Luke and Yvan are not far from the world title at they are highly rated by the IBF (Mendy) and WBC (Campbell), so it would be great to focus on that target and then make a world title fight.”

Talking about the current situation between them, Mendy himself quoted Shakespeare to Campbell by saying: “I wish William Shakespeare could inspire you, dear Luke; To lament over a past misfortune is the surest means of attracting another.”

Meanwhile, trainer Giovanni Boggia, added: “Maybe Luke has had enough of boxing in easy fights? – With all due respect shown to Gary Sykes, Derry Mathews or Lopez.

“Even against Argenis Mendez Campbell went down as he did against Yvan, so it’s may not be good for Luke to go there again.

“But we’re ready when he wants, where he wants, so let the promoters find an agreement,” said Boggia.
