Chavez willing to forfeit $1m per pound if he weighs heavy vs Canelo

The 31 year-old hasn’t made under 167 pounds since losing his green and gold strap to Sergio Martinez in 2012, but fully believes he can hit the mark stipulated by Canelo and his team for May 6 in Las Vegas.

“I will make the weight and I know I will make the weight,” Chavez Jr. said on Tuesday to a small group of reporters, including Ring Magazine.

“I will (be) 100% on May 6. He can put in the contract for a rematch or $1 million for a pound.”

Chavez has gone as high as 172 pounds since leaving the 160 division behind, although has never looked comfortable north of 168. A stoppage loss against a much bigger Andrzej Fonfara in April 2015 confirmed Chavez wasn’t ready to go any higher than super-middleweight, so with the right conditioning, the son of a legend should be able to be in top shape come fight night.

Canelo, 26, has some worries of his own as the two-weight ruler has to bulk-up a full nine pounds on the night, something many in the sport see as close to his ideal weight.

A fight with Gennady Golovkin has been put off due to money and weight squabbles in the past, whilst Canelo will be aiming to prove he can be as solid as ever against Chavez before moving on to face ‘GGG’ in the fall.
