José Miguel Borrego impresses on US debut

Borrego demolished Tomas Mendez early in the first round to get his 10th knockout in 11 fights. Borrego-Mendez was the fight that opened the Fox Sport 1 televised card from Tunica, Mississippi. The event was hosted by Warriors Boxing at the ‘Horseshoe Casino’ last Thursday night.

From the first round. Borrego left his corner ready to impose his talent and shortly before finishing the round connected a hook to the liver of Mendez who remained on the canvas showing signs of severe pain. A masterful stroke by Borrego, which has become the hallmark of Mexican boxing for a long time.

With this victory, Borrego improved his record to 11-0 with seven KO’s in the first round alone, two KO’s in the second and another in the fifth round. The only fight that Borrego went the distance was in his second fight against Angel Mendiola in 2015 when he won by UD in 4 rounds.

Garry Jonas PROBOX Management said “Borrego showed us that he has the tools to enter the rankings very soon. We are happy, and we hope to see him back in the USA in a few months. This young man has the talent to go very far and become the star that Mexican boxing is looking for a long time.”

“We could not appreciate all the talent that Borrego has in his arsenal. This fight ended very soon, but we saw his great power and his physical conditions, little by little we are going to improve the level of the rivals and we will be able to appreciate all the quality that this boy has,” Added coach Ricardo Cummings

“Discipline and work in the gym will make Borrego a prospect with an encouraging future. We were a little anxious about the debut in the United States, but that was only for a moment. After seeing Jose Miguel there in the ring I knew it was a matter of time to end the fight,” said the second Helder Medina Olivares

“I’m happy, this fight was very important for us. I was fighting for the first time in the USA and wanted to give my best on national TV. Thank God everything went well and we won as expected.

“I want to thank the support that I received from Mexico; it was exciting to read their comments. I also want to thank Al Haymon, Premier Boxing Champion and Warriors Boxing for giving me this opportunity. I hope they have enjoyed this fight and we will come for more in the next few months,” said Borrego.
