Why Canelo’s move up in weight could lead to further Golovkin delay

According to promoter Oscar De La Hoya, Canelo will face Chavez before moving onto a September clash with ‘GGG’, the terms of which could now hinge on how the Mexican superstar feels at the higher weight.

Canelo has always been massive at 154 and forced to boil down considerably to make super-welterweight, which is why many believe a move to 160, hence a fight with Golovkin, should have happened a long time ago.

A dilemma may now raise its head on May 7 should Canelo feel completely comfortable making 164.5 pounds and put on a devastating performance that would make the 26 year-old think twice about moving back down.

Fighting at 164.5 could prove to be a revelation for Canelo and lead the two-weight world champion to consider the possibility of winning another title belt at a further weight in the future.

Heading up another 3.5 pounds would be a synch for Canelo to do, and with Callum Smith primed to face Anthony Dirrell for the vacant belt at 168 pounds, a new target may emerge from the Cinco de Mayo extravaganza.

It’s plausible then that Golovkin would himself have to move up to super-middleweight in order to finally seal his opportunity to battle Canelo in what would be the most lucrative fight in the boxing world today.

Obviously, Chavez Jr. will have a lot to say about that, provided he can even make it down to the stipulated catchweight, although Canelo remains a huge favorite to succeed and is expected to be a monster in the ring on fight night.

The May 6 outcome gets more interesting by the day.
