A Mexican war, taking place above the 160 pound middleweight limit, has been in the pipeline for some weeks, although according to De La Hoya, Chavez is stalling on signing his side of the deal.

The Cinco de Mayo weekend date is becoming a tradition for Canelo on the back of Floyd Mayweather retiring and Golden Boy see Chavez as potentially the ideal preparation for a fight at 160 pounds against Gennady Golovkin in September.

A weight of around 165 pounds has been touted for the contest, which would see Canelo fighting above 155 pounds for the very first time in his career.

The two-weight world champion has been dipping his toes above the super-welterweight limit for the past three years, but doesn’t seem ready to test himself against the best middleweight on the planet just yet.

Chavez, who has shown recent frailties since being deposed from his position as WBC middleweight champion by Sergio Martinez in 2012, is seen as far less a threat than jumping straight into a battle with ‘GGG’.

De La Hoya has already pencilled in a date in September for Canelo to eventually step up to the plate, for a contest that could see Golovkin headline in Las Vegas for the first time since turning pro.
