Nick Blackwell unfit to attend British Board hearing, father updates on condition

Nick Blackwell remains in hospital as the former British middleweight champion recovers from being put in a coma for a second time in eight months following an unsanctioned sparring session.

Two men were subsequently suspended by the BBBofC, whilst Blackwell would have been required to explain his actions after going against doctors and Board stipulations never to fight again.

The outcome of the hearing will be released this week, although Blackwell’s father John has now given an update on the long process his son faces in order to be able to fully get back on his feet.

“We’re still positive but it’s going to take a while. People think that because he’s out of his coma now he’ll suddenly be out and about, but that’s far from the case,” John told the Wiltshire Times.

“His nurses are very positive too and say that he’s ahead of schedule because he’s a naturally strong person.

“He’s currently doing physiotherapy and hydrotherapy which he finds very tiring. He can walk a few yards at a time but only supported by a frame, there’s no way he’d be able to walk unassisted just yet.

“We just have to take each day as it comes and hope he carries on how he’s going,” he added.

Blackwell was initially injured in a battle with Chris Eubank Jr. in March 2016, but after making a quite remarkable recovery – made a life-changing decision to step inside the ropes once more.
