Exclusive: IBF still waiting on Brook decision over Spence Jr.

Spence Jr. has been the number one contender to Brook’s crown for some time now, although a clash at middleweight against Gennady Golovkin in September took precedent for the champion, who subsequently suffered an injury in the fight requiring surgery.

Brook asked for an extension from the IBF in order to recover from facial damage but is due to reveal his plans soon after being linked to a massive spring clash with Amir Khan, something the IBF would also have to debate.

“The IBF I haven’t heard anything on the situation regarding Kell Brook. He’s currently still on medical extension after his last fight,” Chairman Lindsey Tucker exclusively told World Boxing News.

“As far as I know, mandatory challenger Errol Spence Jr. is waiting for his turn at Brook and we should know more about it soon,” he added.

Reports circulated prior to the holiday season that Brook was close to an agreement with Khan, a fight the IBF initially told WBN would be considered for the title by their Board of Directors.

As things currently stand, Spence has options with the WBC regarding an eliminator for their title, potentially against Timothy Bradley, although Brook is still expected to make a decision regarding his own future imminently.
