Deontay Wilder v Andrzej Wawrzyk ‘a go’ for February 25 in Alabama

The 31 year-old, who suffered bicep and hand injuries requiring surgery in his last fight against Chris Arreola, will put his coveted green and gold belt on the line against Polish star Andrzej Wawrzyk.

Wilder has made a steady recovery since going under the knife earlier this year and recently picked up the Knockout of the Year Award for his January win over Artur Szplika at the 54th WBC Covention held in Miami, Florida.

The Wawrzyk clash will represent a fifth defense of the title for Wilder, having already defeated Arreola, Szpilka, Eric Molina and Johann Duhaupas since claiming championship status from Bermane Stiverne almost two years ago.

Opponent Wawrzyk, 29, has lost just once in 33 bouts, but was beaten badly by Alexander Povetkin in a previous 2013 world title challenge and hasn’t really mixed in top-rated company since then.

Wins over the likes of aging campaigners Danny Williams, Francois Botha and more recently Albert Sosnowski have done little to enhance the Pole’s reputation as the Krakow fighter prepares for his toughest test to date in the New Year.

More details of the bout are expected to be released by Premier Boxing Champion in the coming days after representative Tim Smith told WBN Wilder v Wawrzyk was ‘a go’ on Wednesday evening.
