IBF Chairman Lindsey Tucker certainly didn’t dismiss the idea of Brook facing Khan for their 147 pound belt despite Errol Spence Jr. waiting in the wings (and for some considerable time) to be given his shot as mandatory challenger.
Tucker – in fact, invited Brook to put his case to the IBF Board of Directors as things begin to potentially open up for the Yorkshireman following his loss to Gennady Golovkin.
“I was not aware of a Kell Brook versus Amir Khan fight as I was hoping that Brook fight Spence next because he’s been waiting patiently for his turn,” Tucker exclusively told World Boxing News.
Asked directly if Brook would be stripped for fighting Khan next, Tucker answered: “I can’t confirm that, but May is a long way off. This is something that the IBF Board of Directors would end up deciding.
“The IBF Board of Directors would have to approve any fight for Kell Brook other than against Errol Spence.”
The World Boxing Council then helped the situation along by being open to the idea of Timothy Bradley fighting Spence for the number one spot to the winner of Danny Garcia v Keith Thurman, leaving Brook free to battle Khan without obligation until later in the year.
All parties could be happy as a result should Spence accept the WBC route against Bradley, which would in-turn please US and UK fans with two massive bouts either side of the Atlantic.
Khan would have no trouble gaining an IBF ranking due to track record of high-profile bouts and history as an IBF champion previously and Brook definitely wants that fight more than any other as the Sheffield man stated on radio in his home country recently.
“We need to get that drama queen signed up and get rid of him for good,” Brook told talkSPORT.
“I’m ready to sign. I’m ready to do the job, get in there and end his career. He needs to be gone from boxing to be honest and I’m the man to do it.
“He has obviously been in some big fights and he needs this kind of fight to get him up in the morning. It’s the same for me.
“I am ready to go whenever,” he added.
