Exclusive: ‘Maravilla’ Martinez predicts Canelo will dodge Golovkin

The 41 year-old now retired ex-pound for pound star, who is currently a promoter and actor, names Golovkin firmly as the top dog at 160 pounds and sees Canelo doing all he can to avoid a future confrontation.

“I think GGG without a doubt is the best in the division. While he remains the middleweight champion, he will be regarded as the number one,” Martinez exclusively told World Boxing News.

“Regarding a fight with Saul Alvarez, I think it may continue for several years the way it has happened for the last two years (Canelo delaying the fight).

“For me, GGG and his team are the ones pursuing this fight and will continue to do so in order to make a fight against Saul Alvarez. While this goes on, Alvarez and his team will fight others so the Mexican can dodge Golovkin, who is very dangerous at this moment.

“I honestly do not know how the fight can take place with things as they are. It could be that Alvarez will wait because it can happen in many years, but neither Canelo or GGG will be the same boxers as they are today.

“This may be the best way forward for Alvarez but not for the fans,” he added.

Martinez blew the whole division apart when taking Paul Williams out with a thundering shot early in their 2010 rematch before pursuing the best middleweight of that time in Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

The Argentine survived a last round onslaught to score a dominant victory over Chavez Jr. before injuries hampered the final fight of his career against Miguel Cotto in the summer of 2014.
