Exclusive: Peter Fury aims to finalize Deontay Wilder v Hughie

Father and trainer of the undefeated contender, Peter Fury explained that contact has been made ahead of a proposed spring clash between the pair – which would mark Wilder and Hughie returning from respective ring delays.

Wilder suffered hand and bicep ailments in his summer victory over Chris Arreola and underwent surgery to aid the American back to full fitness. Upon his return, Peter hopes Hughie will be in the opposite corner after an absence of almost a year.

“We have meetings this week with a view to finalizing Hughie v Deontay Wilder next year,” Fury exclusively told World Boxing News.

“We are currently in talks and a date in February is among those forward by both sides for the fight.

“I have no doubt Hughie will silence doubters with this fight and be crowned the heavyweight champion of the world in 2017,” he added.

Fury, cousin of former world ruler Tyson, has been dealing with a skin condition called, ‘acne conglobata’ which can have debilitating effects on the body. The 20-0 star last fought in April when defeating Fred Kassi but is said to be close to full recovery and ready for the biggest challenge of all.

Currently ranked 26 with the WBC, Hughie is expected to be bumped up to a previous high in the Top 15 during the WBC Convention later this month – when his case is heard, in order to make a fight with ‘The Bronze Bomber’ possible in the next few months.
