Exclusive: Briedis, Huck contact made on vacant WBC title proposal

Briedis is currently the WBC mandatory challenger and was promised a shot at the green and gold strap by the World Boxing Council earlier this year. As Bellew is in no position to grant this request, it seems more and more likely the 33 year-old will have to relinquish his championship.

Siesta has sounded out number two ranked Marco Huck for a potential vacant title clash should the WBC agree and hopes to come to an amicable arrangement with Bellew, promoter Eddie Hearn and the German.

“We are ready to take on Marco Huck as Mairis is really interested in that fight,” Siesta exclusively told World Boxing News.

“Nobody at the WBC has confirmed that Marco is the one who will be fighting Mairis if the belt becomes vacant, but we hope it’ll be Huck as we like the fight.

“I had few preliminary discussions with Karsten Mahlmann, who is a managing advisor for team Huck and he’s a very straightforward, constructive individual who understands our business and looking for a sincere resolution that satisfies everyone.

“I believe Karsten, Eddie and I will have a conversation this week before we’ll take our proposal to the WBC.”

Asked whether an agreement could be reached to take the fight to the Haye v Bellew undercard, Siesta replied: “If it comes to the situation where Mairis is fighting Marco Huck, I believe that it probably will go to Germany.

“Huck is a massive headliner on one of the biggest television channels in Germany, RTL that is an equivalent to UK’s ITV. Therefore, it will make sense financially for Mairis to travel to Germany.”

It’s also fathomable a deal with Hearn could be worked out that would see Bellew then have the option of moving back down to 200 pounds after the Haye to challenge to oppose whoever is in possession of the WBC belt.

“Both Mairis and Marco are interested in fighting Tony Bellew next, regardless of his outcome against Haye. If Eddie Hearn and Sky, for whatever reason feel that there’s a commercial value in bringing Briedis versus Huck to the UK then maybe it will go on the undercard of Bellew vs Haye.

“Otherwise, it’ll go to Germany, but we will have a much clearer picture at the end of this week on what’s happening with the Bellew/Briedis/Huck situation,” he added.
