Exclusive: WBC #1 Heiland would face Canelo before Golovkin, not surprised Brook/Khan got badly beaten

Heiland has been at the summit of the WBC rankings for some time now following an impressive stoppage of Matthew Macklin in 2014 and is currently awaiting news of a final eliminator from WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman.

As Golovkin is negotiating a mandatory fight with Danny Jacobs – at this point in time and potentially for the first quarter of 2017 – Heiland would be interested if facing Canelo Alvarez in a bid to secure a shot the following September.

“I am just waiting for my shot and willing to face GGG or whoever the put in front of me for the title,” Heiland exclusively told World Boxing News.

“There’s always talk of the Canelo vs GGG fight like a ghost that haunts everybody else, but I’ve been waiting for almost two years and sitting in the number one position in the rankings.

“It seems that because of the Canelo vs GGG situation I will have to wait for probably another 10 years. Hopefully, it won’t be that way because I need to fight for the title as soon as possible.

“Of course I would face Canelo if I have to so I can get to GGG. I guess that would help, but I am willing to face anybody.”

Canelo and Golovkin defeated welterweight opponents this year despite both coming in well over 160 pounds on their respective fight nights in May and September, something that didn’t particularly impress Heiland.

“To me personally, a good welterweight can never defeat a good middleweight. Especially if they face hard punchers like Canelo or GGG. So it wasn’t a surprise that both Brook and Khan got badly beaten.

“I think GGG talking of now facing Jacobs is a better fight on paper, to be honest, and a step in the right direction. It’s quite an attractive fight because of the pedigree of Jacobs and should be a lot closer than Brook,” he added.
