Quigg last fought in February when the 28 year-old lost out via split decision to UK rival Carl Frampton and has since been recovering from surgery to repair a broken jaw.
The Bury man is heading back to the same venue some ten months on from what was supposed to be his defining night in a bid to put the feelers out on a move up to featherweight.
As trainer Joe Gallagher explained, Quigg will remain at the new 126 pound limit until a title opportunity opens up at his old weight, for which his charge would then have no problem heading back down.
“Scott Quigg looks like he will be fighting on the Anthony Joshua undercard whenever it’s finalized,” Gallagher exclusively told World Boxing News.
“We’re just waiting for confirmation but Quigg’s back in and he’s training. It’s just a case of looking at opponents for Scott.
“He’s going to come back in a featherweight contest and we’ll see how he gets on. It will be good to get him out before the end of the year to see where we go from here. We’ve got to see how he is at featherweight and see how Scott gets on.
“There are still opportunities at super-bantamweight with Nehomar Cermeno and Hozumi Hasegawa, but there’s not point making super-bantamweight – the championship limit if there’s no title on the line at the moment. So let’s have a fight back, get back into it and see how we go.”
On a possible rematch between Quigg and Frampton in the future, Gallagher added: “I think the Frampton v Quigg fight would have been better at featherweight. I think making that weight took a bit out of both kids.”
