Despite initial agreement, Povetkin v Stiverne heads to purse bid

The World Boxing Council put out their six-month divisional report last month, stating an agreement was reached between both sides, although a purse bid for Povetkin v Stiverne is now set to get underway on Friday.

“WBC ordered an interim world title between Alexander Povetkin and Bermane Stiverne. The promoters of both have confirmed an agreement has been reached and will advise the date and site of the fight soon,” read the WBC document.

“The mandatory status of the division will be determined during the WBC convention,” it added.

Obviously, something has happened since the statement that means bids will determine who has the rights to stage the event, which would have to favour the deep pockets of Mr. Ryabinsky taking the contest to Russia.

Povetkin was due to challenge current belt holder Deontay Wilder earlier this year until a mix-up regarding the status of banned drug meldonium being present in his system delayed the bout.

Wilder then suffered an injury in defeating Chris Arreola, a substitute for Povetkin, and won’t be fit until 2017.

A warm-up for the American will be planned for soon – potentially around the same time Povetkin v Stiverne takes place – before the winner eventually gets their chance to battle Wilder later next year.
