Kell Brook undergoes surgery, trainer names New Year targets

Brook, 30, suffered the ailment in losing a five-round slugfest with big-punching Kazakh Gennady Golovkin in London earlier this month, going down to defeat for the first time in his 37-fight career.

Although promoter Eddie Hearn stated there may be no need for surgery, Brook eventually underwent a procedure in Sheffield that coach Ingle says should only keep ‘The Special One’ out of action until early next year.

“He looked worse after the fight than he did after the operation,” Ingle told Bob Westerdale of The Sheffield Star.

““The surgeon, who was called Mohammed-Ali believe it or not, went up through his gums, his front teeth, moved an eye to one side and then sorted out the fracture” he explained. “Kell is good, though, and doesn’t want any delays before his next fight – he wants to be out again early in the New year, rather than later.”

On potential opponents, Ingle added: “After fighting Golovkin, Kell only wants to box seriously big names, like Amir Khan, Saul Alvarez, Miguel Cotto.

“Big fights and titles on the line, that’s what you need from this moment on,” he stated.

British rival Khan informed WBN earlier this month that he’s looking to return again in January – and in the UK, although that contest may come a little too soon for Brook.

Cotto’s team are reportedly eyeing up dates from the spring on 2017 onwards – which could open the door for Brook, whilst Canelo has been ruled out until May when a massive fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend is lined up for the Mexican.
