Exclusive: Sanchez confirms Golovkin could still make 154, would agree Mayweather fight

Golovkin pummelled predominant welterweight Kell Brook into a five-round submission in London earlier this month and had initially been linked to a potential unification with Briton Billy Joe Saunders in 2017.

Saunders currently possesses the only belt to elude ‘GGG’ at his current weight, with the general consensus being the Kazakh puncher will head to super-middleweight once all five belts are around his waist.

Not so – trainer Abel Sanchez told WBN, as a fight with Mayweather could still happen should the American launch a comeback and be willing to meet Golovkin at the lower super welterweight limit.

“Although I have not heard any rumours lately, but if Mayweather comes out of retirement ‘GGG’ would be happy to take that fight,” Sanchez exclusively told World Boxing News.

“It’s a massive fight and a one of significance, so yes ‘GGG’ would go down to 154 for Mayweather.

“The only thing is, Mayweather has a brilliant way of keeping himself out there so nobody ever knows whether these rumours are true,” he added.

Mayweather has been out of action for over a year now since defeating Andre Berto but will be well aware that a 50th career encounter would be a huge money-maker, and even more so should he choose Golovkin as his opponent.

Despite Golovkin’s lack of pay-per-view experience, adding Mayweather’s name would certainly push sales into millions, although any fight seems a long way from becoming a reality at the moment.

Reports of a clash against UFC’s Conor McGregor have finally subsided, leaving Mayweather with only a handful of options if he does go for the half century of wins.

Golovkin is one, whilst former opponent Canelo Alvarez would be another, alongside the UK’s Amir Khan and Kell Brook respectively.

On US shores, Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman have also been mentioned as potential Mayweather foes as the window of opportunity for the near 40 year-old to announce his expected return slowly closes.
