De La Hoya, currently doing the media rounds for Canelo’s super-welterweight title shot against another UK fighter in Liam Smith, has taken some flak in recent times following the decision to avoid a fight with GGG in favour of a drop back to 154.
As both Canelo and ‘GGG’ near respective contests in the United States and Britain this September, De La Hoya also spoke to WBN about a possible future push across the Atlantic and whether Kell Brook can pull off an upset against the Kazakh puncher.
“A fight with GGG would be the choice above Saunders,” De La Hoya exclusively told World Boxing News.
“GGG has a good fighter in front of him and I expect to be watching an entertaining fight on the 10th. Anytime you have a man with Kell Brook’s skills in the opposite corner there’s always a chance in this sport.”
Asked what he thought of Brook weighing 176 pounds at the WBC check weight, De La Hoya added: “Honestly, I didn’t pay that close attention being that I’m not the promoter.”
Another question put to De La Hoya was the chances of Canelo following Golovkin’s lead and heading over to the UK himself in the near future, to which he answered: “It’s not out of the question.”
Canelo must come through his September 17 encounter with Smith without too much fuss in order to keep interest in the Golovkin bout at a maximum before an eventual move up to 160 pounds in 2017.
Whispers on the grapevine had put Canelo in the ring with Saunders as early as December, although advisor Don Chargin recently told WBN that a move up to 160 full-time wasn’t on the cards this year.
