Exclusive: Golovkin now at 164, Brook ‘weight by design’ – Sanchez

The WBC ruling allows the organisation to safely keep tabs on how a fighter loses weight and announced the figures for Gennady Golovkin versus Brook to huge surprise earlier this month.

Whilst Golovkin came in at his usual 165 pounds steadily dropping weight for the September 10 date, Brook scaled right on the 10% mark (176) any middleweight is allowed to be over the stipulated poundage.

As Sanchez gave WBN an update of Golovkin, the coach is sure Brook’s team got the reaction they wanted as the weigh-in figures went public.

“Everything is going great and on schedule for Gennady and right now he averages 164 pounds,” Sanchez exclusively told World Boxing News.

“I think Kell Brook has some very good boxing people around him and the weight (176) was by design, they have a game plan for preparations, boxing training and I’m sure they will have a plan on fight night.

“We are looking forward to putting on a great show against Brook and fighting again before the end of 2016,” he added.

Just nine days away from the seven-day check, Brook should have shed at least 5% of the excess he carried at 30 days and all eyes will be on the Yorkshireman when he hits the scales next Saturday as both champions move towards fight week.
