As the experienced former champion prepares for a move back down to super-welterweight against world title holder Liam Smith, speculation is rife that Canelo will head back up after September 17.
Alvarez relinquished his WBC title at 160 pounds – won from Miguel Cotto, in order to put the brakes on a clash with pound for pound star Gennady Golovkin until the 26 year-old feels ready to fully settle at the higher limit.
A WBC stipulated fight with Golovkin ultimately paid the price due to Canelo’s decision, although Chargin is sure the encounter will go ahead in the New Year, which will be pleasing for President Mauricio Sulaiman and the rest of the boxing world to hear.
“The fact of the matter is Canelo can still make the weight easily,” Chargin exclusively told World Boxing News.
“The upcoming Liam Smith is an opportunity at a third belt and should be an exciting fight, but sometime next year I expect Canelo will move up to 160 and by that time should be comfortable there.
“For me, the WBC is the best sanctioning body and Mauricio Sulaiman is fast becoming a great President and I know he was personally hurt by Canelo’s decision.
“But Canelo v GGG will happen. That’s the fight the world wants more than any other and I think it will happen in 2017. It’s the right time frame business and weight-wise and will be a great fight once it does go ahead.”
Training for the Smith fight is in full swing and Chargin is sure the Briton will gel with Canelo to make for an eye-catching contest at the Cowboys Stadium in Texas.
“Smith and Canelo will be a fan-pleasing fight, I have no doubts about that,” he predicted. “I think Canelo will wind up the winner but I know Smith and his people feel they will win.
“Smith was chosen because he’s a world champion with a pleasing style and Canelo won’t have to chase him. That’s the way he likes it,” added Chargin.
