At 29 years old, Jones has already fought 52 times during his career, having traded blows with the likes of Roberto Garcia, Ricardo Williams Jr, Alfonso Gomez, Ty Brunson and Jesus Soto-Karass in the US, plus shared a pair of UK scraps with both Kell Brook and more recently Brian Rose at 154 pounds.
A solitary victory this year over Mikel Williams will be followed up next month by the American who is currently training at Big Bear with Gennady Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez for drop in weight and a stay busy fight.
“I’m in camp now and training alongside Gennady Golovkin,” Jones exclusively told World Boxing News.
“I’m fighting August 20th in Milwaukee on a Roc Nation card. There’s no set opponent just yet but I should know something soon.
“At this point, I’m just looking forward to the next fight which is more like a tune-up type of fight but I will say I am moving back down to 147 and looking to get back in the top 10 in the ratings.
“So whoever it may be that I need to fight to get me a top 10 spot is who I want to fight,” he added.
Asked his thoughts on stablemate Golovkin facing his old foe Brook on September 10 in London, Jones admitted that like most, he was surprised when the contest was made official.
“When I first Initially heard about it I couldn’t believe it, considering Brook is a champion at welterweight,” stated Jones.
“I just thought someone was pulling my leg, so I got online and turned out it was true. The first thing I thought was Kell must be getting a fat check to be fighting Gennady.
“But seriously, at this level no fight is easy, so I can see it being somewhat competitive early. I have no doubt that Kell will try to keep Gennady on the outside, but as soon as Gennady begins to touch Kell, I think he won’t be able to hang with him.
“Gennady has scary power and I don’t think Brook will be able to take it. Saying that, it should be exciting while it lasts,” he predicted.
