Guernsey’s Tom Duff returns from two-year absence this weekend

The unbeaten middleweight is relishing his first fight since 2014 when he climbs between the ropes at Plymouth’s Guildhall on Western Country Boxing’s July 30 ‘Summer Sizzler’ show.

The Channel Islander, who won both of his two professional fights to date, told uko-boxing.com his inactivity has not been by choice.

“I got shingles which knocked me about and then developed tendonitis in my wrist, which slowed everything down,” he said.

“It’s been frustrating because it’s been enforced. I enjoy my boxing and it’s been difficult but I’m raring to go now. I always keep myself fit and I’m very active so I haven’t lost too much ground physically.

“I’m 100% now and can’t wait to get back in there.”

Duff, who is waiting on an opponent for his third pro fight, regularly ‘commutes’ from Guernsey to Bristol for training and sparring.

“I was born in London but have lived in Guernsey since I was 12,” he explained.

“I boxed as an amateur in the Western Counties, where I got to know people in Bristol and ended up going pro with Paddy John’s Gym. I mix up my training between my gym in Guernsey and Paddy’s in Bristol.

“It’s not exactly a typical commute but I go over there when I can and the rest of the time they give me stuff to work on back in Guernsey. We make it work – plus Guernsey is a nice place to do your roadwork and stuff with cliffs and scenery.”

Plymouth fighters – lightweights, Chris Adaway and Des Newton, and super middleweight, Cristian Hoskin-Gomez, are also in action.

Launceston bantamweight, Marcus Hodgson, and Cornwall cruiserweight, Marcus Kelly, complete the card as they stand by to make their professional debuts.
