‘GGG v Eubank close’ – Wembley ruled out in favour of UK arena

Eubank Jr. defeated Tom Doran on Saturday night at the O2 Arena and immediately called on the feared Golovkin to agree a UK fight in September.

One change to the plans has been mentioned by Hearn though as the possibility of the fight heading to Wembley Stadium hit the skids due to the start of the new football season in August.

“Wembley is a great option but when the football season kicks in it becomes difficult and now with the new Tottenham situation (Champions League home games at the stadium),” Hearn told Sky Sports News HQ.

“Wembley is really a window for us in April, May or June. This is more suited to an O2 Arena. We are looking at dates at that arena and others around the country, so fingers we can get that over the line for British boxing and we are certainly close now.”

Hearn has admitted on more than one occasion that he questioned Eubank’s real desire to share the ring with the three-belt knockout artist, although was reassured when holding further talks with the pair after the weekend.

“I keep waiting for the Eubank’s to turn around and say ‘It’s just for a bit of press or a PR stunt’ – but they are deadly serious and we have taken another major step towards that fight just now. I believe that fight will get made this week, I really do.

“The danger was that everybody talks about wanting to fight people these days as Golovkin was supposed to fight Canelo but Canelo decided to swerve that fight. Billy Joe Saunder has been linked to that fight, but also swerved Golovkin. I don’t blame them as no elite fighter wants to fight Golovkin – apart from Chris Eubank Jr.

“It will be one of the biggest fights we’ve seen in this country. When was the last time a name like Golovkin came and defended three belts in this country? – It’s unheard of and they really believe they can win the fight.

“I always felt like the Eubank’s wanted the fight, but I just come from a meeting and I KNOW they want the fight. I also know Gennady Golovkin will take the fight.

“It will be my job over the next 48-72 hours to get that closed off and seal what will be another huge event,” he added.
