Exclusive: GGG coach Sanchez on Canelo in 2017, 168 move, Eubank Jr

Oscar De La Hoya recently tweeted that a meeting with GGG promoter Tom Loeffler had resulted in an initial agreement for Canelo to fight Golovkin in the fall of next year, something that was quickly dismissed out of hand.

Despite the social media post by Golden Boy’s chief, Loeffler had already been working on Golovkin’s next move, with British champion Chris Eubank Jr. the current frontrunner to be in the opposite corner for a return in the coming months.

Sanchez is keen to get back in the gym with the undefeated pound for pound star and get working on their continued attempts at 160 pound domination and trusts Loeffler and GGG manager’s Oleg and Max Hermann to find the right option for Golovkin.

“I am happy that Tom Loeffler and The Hermann Brothers are continuously working and doing what is best for our team,” Sanchez exclusively told World Boxing News.

“I’m confident that GGG will fight in late August or early September and will be back in camp soon.

“The process that Tom and The Hermann’s have to go through to get somebody in the ring is a long and difficult one, so I am sure they exhausted every option for the Canelo fight, so here we are.

“In regards to Chris Eubank Jr, I keep hearing that he is an alternative, but he is not an alternative, he has been in our discussions for at least a year. If he is the opponent for next fight, then I’m glad they were able to work out the details for it to happen.”

On a potential move up to super-middleweight, which has been touted for Golokvin a lot lately, Sanchez added: “As a team, we continuously and consistently discuss the options and plans for the future, but the decision will be GGG’s and it will be when Tom and the Hermann’s have got the right situation for us to make the move.

“Once it happens, there’s not a particular name or opponent in mind but more that it has to be the right deal, which I am sure Tom and the Hermann’s will negotiate at that time,” he added.
