Lomachenko KO’s Martinez, becomes two-weight champ in seventh fight

The 28 year-old Ukrainian double Olympic gold medallist and two-time world amateur champion stalked Martinez for the first four rounds before delivering and amazing two-punch combination, the latter of which – a right hook, dropped the Puerto Rican hard.

There was no recovering from Martinez as the two-time featherweight titlist was counted out by referee Danny Schiavone confirming Lomachenko as a second weight world champion in just his seventh pro bout.

After the contest, Lomachenko dedicated his victory to recently deceased legend Muhammad Ali and immediately called on the only man to defeat him to agree a rematch in the next few months.

Orlando Salido, who drew with WBC ruler Francisco Vargas last week, scored a tight split decision win over Lomachenko in March 2014 and is now the number one target for a first defence of the WBO super featherweight belt.

The Mexican was ringside to witness the contest unfold and immediately reacted to Lomachenko saying another fight between the two was ‘personal’ to him.

“I’m ready. I’m not impressed with what he did to Rocky,” said Salido. “It’s not that personal to me. It’s just another fight. He moved around a lot. So what?”

No doubting that promoter Bob Arum will make the return his top priority for the fall as Lomachenko celebrates one of the greatest feats by a professional boxer in recent times.

Counting out the very low weights, which this kind of thing has happened this decade with the likes of Kazuto Ioka and Naoya Inoue, Lomachenko is breaking new ground at 126 pounds and above and could conceivably be a three-weight king before his tenth outing in the paid ranks.
