Tony Bellew open to heavyweight jump for David Haye clash

The 33 year-old is on cloud nine since sealing a historic victory at Everton FC’s Goodison Park stadium on Sunday night and immediately called on Haye to drop back down to cruiserweight.

Haye left the 200 pound limit behind in 2007 after becoming unified title holder at the weight and has recently bulked up to 220 plus in scoring comeback wins over Mark de Mori and Arnold Gjergjaj following a four-year absence.

It’s unlikely Haye would consider shedding the weight he recently added to his armoury and Bellew now says he would consider adding extra poundage himself should ‘The Hayemaker’ agree to open negotiations.

“If he wants to get down and train properly he could do cruiserweight but he’s happy living the lifestyle he lives and parading around and if that’s the way he wants to do it we can do it at heavyweight. It’s not an issue. I’ll leave him to weigh whatever he wants,” Bellew told Sky Sports.

“He’s a small heavyweight. We’re not talking about Tyson Fury, Wladimir Klitschko, Deontay Wilder or David Price here. We’re talking about me going in with a dwarf heavyweight – someone who’s a built-up cruiserweight. He’s a manufactured heavyweight and not a true heavyweight. Anything over 16st and he’s slower anyway,” he added.

Bellew may well want to stipulate Haye comes down to a limit around 210 pounds in a bid to even out the current differential for what would be a non-title fight and a heavyweight debut for ‘The Bomber’.

The WBC will be expecting Bellew to put pen to paper on a mandatory fight with Champion in Recess Grigory Drozd in the next few months, although that fight doesn’t seem to be the direction the Liverpudlian wants to go in.

That could leave Bellew and promoter Eddie Hearn will a big decision to make regarding the green and gold belt the staunch Evertonian fought so hard to put in his possession at the weekend.
