Canelo’s Conscience: To GGG or not to GGG?

Despite making bold claims in the ring after his victory over Amir Khan in Golovkin’s presence, Canelo chose to vacate the WBC title – rather than agree to the deadline set by President Mauricio Sulaiman.

This move disappointed the vast majority of fans who are worried the ongoing saga will turn into another Floyd Mayweather v Manny Pacquiao debacle where both fighters leave it too late in their careers to nail down the fight.

As Canelo is just 25, time is considerably on his side – but with Golovkin recently turning 34, it’s obvious that the Kazakh is keen to secure his legacy fight as soon as humanly possible.

‘GGG’ gained Canelo’s belt from recent events, which he had claimed was all he wanted, but deep down the HBO PPV headliner is desperate to overtake Roman Gonzalez as the active pound for pound king.

Canelo is still debating whether to take the fight when he can still boil down to 155 pounds as handing over any sort of advantage to a puncher like Golovkin could prove as costly as Khan showed when horrendously KO’d earlier this month.

Golovkin has repeatedly stated that he would be willing to move down to 154 pounds, but only to face somebody in that division – i.e Floyd Mayweather Jr. – and isn’t going to allow Canelo the option to fight at the 160 limit at anything less.

The money the two could make was astronomical when Canelo was too a world champion, so handing all the gold over to Golovkin wasn’t the wisest move financially for the two-weight world title holder. Negotiations would have to be of a 50-50 nature in order for Canelo to sign on as rumours of a battle with ex-Golovkin foe David Lemieux continue to do the rounds for the fall. Should

Should Canelov v Lemieux ultimately be signed, that would leave Golovkin chasing Billy Joe Saunders again after a previous offer was rebuffed by the Briton for a fight in April.

Whatever happens in the near future, 2017 is surely the deadline to make the fight a reality as Golovkin will be aiming to move up to super middleweight once all the belts have been acquired at his current division, which could – in turn, leave Canelo in limbo and without his main rival.
