‘We look forward to GGG v Canelo being made in the future’ – WBC

Alvarez, 25, had claimed that he was all for making a massive unification with Gennady Golovkin after knocking out Amir Khan in stunning fashion earlier this month but has since scoffed at the WBC’s stipulated two-week deadline.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman wanted both sides to agree a prolonged deal by the May 24 purse bid date next week, although Canelo chose to vacate the title in favour of negotiating at his own pace.

The general consensus is that Canelo will now move away from a battle with GGG until he has fully grown into the 160 pound limit, whilst the WBC would only state that they are hopeful the fight eventually gets over the line.

‘The World Boxing Council has received official confirmation from Golden Boy Promotions with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez decision to vacate the WBC middleweight championship .

Gennady Golovkin is hereby recognized as the undisputed WBC middleweight champion of the world.

The WBC wishes “Canelo” Alvarez great success in his career and will certainly look forward to seeing Golovkin vs Alvarez materialize in the future.’ – World Boxing Council
