Haye doubts Briggs clash following Dimitrenko announcement

That’s the view of Haye himself, who promised to meet Briggs in an autumn showdown provided ‘The Cannon’ came through a fight on his undercard later this month.

Haye, 35, fights Arnold Gjergjaj at the O2 Arena in his second comeback fight on May 21, although is now questioning whether Briggs has enough left at 44 to fend off the former European title holder.

“I’m thrilled to say that we’ve got another quality fighter appearing on the Haye Day undercard,” said Haye.

“Alexander Dimitrenko is a big guy and a heavy puncher and a real challenger for a World Title – I think he’ll cause Briggs some serious problems.

“If The Cannon does manage to walk away victorious I’ll be surprised, but at the same time, he’ll have proved his worth. It just means I get to be the one to knock him out – which is even better.

“The fans are in for a treat on May 21. We’ve put together a really strong card that I’m sure will get people pumped for the main event of the evening – my knockout win against ‘The Cobra’. Entertainment and excitement is guaranteed.”

Dimitrenko has stopped three of six victories on the spin since losing to Kubrat Pulev in May 2012. The 33 year-old will be looking stop the resurgence of Briggs in a bid to push towards a first ever world title shot.

The only other loss on the 6ft 7ins puncher’s record was a majority decision reverse against Eddie Chambers in 2009 – a full seven years ago, and Dimitrenko will head to the UK for the first time in confident mood on recent form.
