Molina (25-3, 19 KO) was one of a handful of opponents lined up to face the IBF champion Joshua in his next fight on June 25 until it was recently announced that fellow American Dominic Breazeale had got the shot.
Having defeated the long-reigning Wladimir Klitschko, unified champ Fury currently holds the WBA, WBO and IBO world titles, while the title he was stripped of – the ‘IBF’ strap – is now in the hands of Joshua after he stopped Charles Martin.
Despite missing out on the trip to London, Molina is still enjoying watching the heavyweight scene take off in the UK.
“Firstly, I want to say how good it is to see boxing taking off again in Britain and the atmospheres created are very exciting – hopefully, I can fight there one day. The heavyweight division, in particular, is flourishing and Britain has two world class fighters,” Molina exclusively told World Boxing News.
“Although Anthony Joshua is athletic with great size and power, I think that right now Tyson Fury would beat him. I like Joshua and respect what he is doing, but I’m not sure that he is quite ready for Fury just yet.
“If you look at how Klitschko reacted to fighting a taller heavyweight, it didn’t go well. They are used to being the taller guy so it changes everything and I think it would be the same for Joshua. Give Joshua two or three more fights that go into the later rounds and then he could maybe beat Fury. Right now though, Fury wins relatively easily because of his great reflexes, defence and the way he uses his size.”
With the Joshua fight off the cards, Molina’s attention will have to look elsewhere as he seeks his next challenge following a career-best win over Poland’s Tomasz Adamek.
“I don’t like to call out fighters, but it is no secret that I am willing to travel anywhere to make good fights. The people say about judges and getting decisions in some countries is not something that bothers me – I just want to face the best.
“One fight I really like is against Lucas Browne – in fact, we have both said we are interested in it. Obviously, we have to see what happens with Browne after his failed drug test, but if he comes through that, I would love for us to get it on.”
