The 28 year-old carded a debated split decision over fierce rival Quigg in a contest that was barely contested until the final four rounds. ‘The Jackal’ ran out a worthy winner in the end but now has two mandatory challengers to consider in the near future.
After adding Quigg’s WBA belt to his IBF version, Frampton put himself in a no-win situation regarding his titles as both organisations want their respective super bantamweight champions to face different opponents next.
Frampton is sure to lose one of his straps in the coming weeks as the WBA stipulate a clash with Cuban star Guillermo Rigondeaux by the summer and the IBF order a contest opposite Japan’s Shingo Wake.
Similar to the Tyson Fury precedent beforehand, Frampton is unlikely to be given any leeway on his next move, which would also mean a rematch with Quigg for any world title is out of the question.
When asked about a possible second fight with Quigg after his victory, Frampton said: “If I have to have a rematch and the public demands it, no problem. But I’d rather move on to bigger and better things. The world’s our oyster.”
Manager Barry McGuigan seems to have other plans for his man, after adding: “Leo Santa Cruz is an obvious fight,” although moving up in weight would also mean Frampton giving up both his 122 championships.
