Exclusive: GGG trainer says no divas! – Canelo or Khan, Golovkin only fights for WBC title at 160

WBC middleweight champion Canelo puts his title on the line against Khan on May 7 at a catchweight of 155 pounds ahead of a mandatory clash with Golovkin later this year.

Khan, who is predominantly a welterweight, hikes up a full eight pounds to challenge former 154 pound title holder Alvarez, in what is seen as a shrewd move for the former Olympic silver medallist.

Should the Briton pull off a massive upset against Canelo, Khan would then be first in line to defend the belt against the undefeated and big-punching Golovkin, a fighter who is almost a stone above him in weight.

Despite this huge gulf, Sanchez says Golovkin is unmoved on the weight differential and would exercise his right to challenge for the title at the correct weight limit – whether the fight takes place against Canelo or Khan.

“They are fighting for the middleweight title and the maximum limit is 160 lbs,” Sanchez exclusively told World Boxing News.

“Gennady Golovkin is a middleweight, so for Canelo or Khan the limit is 160. They can come in at any weight under 160 they like, but ‘GGG’ will not bow to DIVA demands and will fight at 160.”

Asked his thoughts on the Canelo v Khan fight itself, Sanchez added: “The fight is good for Canelo to stop Khan late,” he predicted.

“Khan will make for a good fight early as his hand speed will trouble Canelo, but the strength of Canelo will take over in the second part of the fight and that will be the big difference.

“I wasn’t really shocked or surprised that this fight got made in the first place as it seems like Canelo’s M.O to take on these type of fights,” added Sanchez.
